What is TPO and why was it banned?
TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide, CAS 75980-60-8) is a photoinitiator that was previously widely used in gel polishes. It is responsible for the polymerization process, ensuring that the material cures reliably under the lamp.
However, studies have shown that TPO may have sensitizing properties. For this reason, it has been included in the list of prohibited substances in the EU (Regulation 1223/2009, Annex II).
What has AKZENTZ replaced TPO with?
AKZENTZ has ensured compliance with the new EU requirements and replaced TPO with modern, safe photoinitiators.
TPO-L (Ditolyl) is a different substance with a different CAS number, registered in the CosIng database and permitted for use in the EU and other countries.
Products supplied to the EU market do not contain the prohibited TPO (Diphenyl).
The “TPO FREE” label is therefore completely accurate: it indicates the absence of the prohibited TPO. The presence of TPO-L and other permitted components fully complies with EU requirements.
Please note:
From September 1, 2025, only TPO-free products are available on our website rbeauty-industry.eu.
In countries outside the EU, products containing TPO may still be sold. Therefore, it is important for customers in Europe to purchase products from their regional distributor.
Document updates (SDS)
To confirm compliance, AKZENTZ is updating all SDS documents and gradually publishing them on its official website.
What does “HEMA-Free” mean?
The “HEMA-Free” label means that the product does not contain the monomer HEMA.
